Imagine Dragons - Digipack

Imagine Dragons - Digipack

Imagine Dragons are an alternative rock group therefore is similar to Paleme. On the other hand, Imagine Dragons released an album on the 23rd of June 2017. From the front cover you can see it is very simplistic and apart from the middle strip down the centre there is minimal use of colour. This is different to Paleme's CD cover because Paleme takes up a large proportion of the front cover and the background contains patterns and colour.

The back cover takes a similar style as the front. This is because it contains the same rainbow strip which features on the front cover. Again, it is very simplistic and contains the song list in the centre of the frame. This is a different style approach compared to Paleme's digipack however there are similarities because Jordan ( Paleme ) features on every image on the digipack conveying that we too have a consistent style throughout the digipack. The spine of the Imagine Dragons album is somewhat identical to ours, as it contains our artist name and album name just like the imagine dragons digipack.

Costume Research

Due to the genre of our song being alternative rock we have produced research on what various alternative rock bands and artists wear. This evidence above shows that alternative rock artists mostly have a relaxed style and appearance that consists of jeans, a plain t-shirt and some form jacket, however the colours of the costumes are very mutual and usually black or white. However due to the nature of our song we will be alternating the main performers outfit by including some bright coloured t-shirts or trainers.

Weather Forecast

For further location and filming planning we have researched the weather forecast for our intended filming locations. This way we know that we are able to film our footage within the same location and day.

Similar Genre Music Video

The music video initialises with a vinyl player being started, and Kid Cudi the main artist is sitting at a party drinking champagne to himself from the bottle; it is clear to see he is secluded from the other people and almost in his 'own world'. As soon as the bass drops everything around him turns to slow motion, whilst Cudi remains in the current time. The performer is singing along and it remains with this type of shot for a while; I can perceive everyone involved with the party having a good time and consuming alcohol. There is a small feature with Drake in the music video, and considering how big of an artist Drake is, this is significant to showing the prestige of the video. At the end of the clip the last shots involve Kid Cudi being wasted and struggling to walk in straight line. This connects with the lyrics very well as the song is all about living your life to the full.

Therefore after analysing this music video we can relate how as a group we wish to have an individual performer that is the focus of the story line and the plot. As well as this the plot of Kid Cudi's music video includes a relaxed and party vibe with alcohol, this inspires us as our music video is about drugs and having a good time.

Evidence of Filming

Here is footage of when we were filming our music video, this particular footage shows when we was filming at Willingale, Ongar, The lodge. Here you can see the main performer being filmed at a mid-shot whilst the group are in the cabin relaxing as part of the background image.

Magazine Cover Research

This Billboard cover has inspired us as we feel like the costume, representation and focus of the main artist. We believe that the use of the dark outfit and vibrant coloured background will accurately reflect our performer in our music video and photoshoots, This will increase our synergy through our video, website and magazine cover.

We have also found this Billboard magazine cover that we believe would give us the opportunity to use the background depth to compliment the performs image, this is because the performer has a rather reserved personality but with music expresses his opinions.

Magazine Cover 1st Draft

Here you can see the first draft we have produced for the Paleme Billboard magazine cover. This cover is successful because of the color and outfit synergy from the album to the cover, However the negatives of this cover are the nose coloring on Paleme and the text. To improve we will be editing what the text says and the font we will be using in order to add more synergy from the magazine cover to the digipack.

Album - Song List

Today we have produced the rest of our album contents. This includes the names of the other album songs and the name of the album and why we called it this.

Album Name; The New Pioneer.
Songs;
1. Washed Up
2. Clean for a day
3. Spiked
4. Oh Charlie
5. Drugs
6. Moving up
7. The Drop
8. Redemption
9. Ditch The Girl
10. Night Conversations.

The meaning behind the album name is that Paleme is a young artist that is aiming to create a new image and interpretation of the youth culture.

Lip Sync - (Group Experiment)

Lip Syncing in this sense can be defined as the simultaneous recording of voice and picture, especially the synchronization of lip movements with recorded sound.

We did this lip sync task as a test to find out which member of our group was most suited to be the role of main performer. For me personally, the factors that needed to be considered was firstly whether the person could be in time with the words of the songs, and additionally being able to clearly see the words that they are saying; which is essential information because we had to put ourselves in the perspective of the audience. Another factor that was needed, can be summed up to a lack awkwardness, in that they are able to move to the beat in a successful way, this doesn't have to mean dancing.

Once we had decided on our song 'drugs' by Adam Jensen we took a camera outside to film each member of the film lip syncing with the song, we just placed the camera on a tripod to create a still shot, and then individually sung a part of the tune.

I will now sum up my personal interpretation of the results, Antonio seemed to be very good at lip syncing, and it was very clear what he was saying because of his over exaggerated lip movements, and the same can be said for Jordan. Sam wasn't particularly good at lip syncing and as a result specialised in the other areas of the production process of the music video. Finally, Harry seemed to have the correct movement with the video, rather then standing awkwardly, and his lip syncing was similarly adequate.

Font

Here we have produced a vote on which font our audience believe we should use for our digipak and our website. We gave them the option from an italic font or standard font. The out come clearly shows how prosto sans in an italic style is the most popular font according to our audience.

Social Media Accounts

As part of our artist marketing we have created further social media accounts in order to increase our artists recognition and image. We have used a Snapchat, twitter and Instagram account to target our young target audience.

Lyrics Timeline for 'Drugs' by Adam Jensen

Group Reflection

In our group Sam has been placed in charge of the editing and filming part of our music video. So far, he has implemented a lot of time into the editing but more time needs to be placed on the filming side because it seems as though there isn't enough coherency throughout the music video; thus, our group have decided to try and create more of a narrative or story line that will be closely connected to the lyrics of the song.

Jordan has been put in charge of the magazine cover and various other tasks, he is currently an A level art student so the skills that he gained from that have played a vital part in the progress of Jordan's tasks. He is also our main performer so most of the time he is going out with the group for various filming or sometimes photography.

Antonio has been placed on digipak duty, our group as a whole have been attempting to center on what our synergy will actually be, at the moment it seems to be 'nature' which is perfect because all of our filming has taken place in grassy or forestry areas. Antonio has been doing well so far and will try to improve our digipak even further.

Harry Foord has the website objective, which is currently taking a long time to complete, not from lack of effort but from our busy schedules; some free time may need to be sacrificed in order to complete these tasks to their fullest potential. Harry has also been carrying out the various other tasks that have been appointed to our group.

Overall, I would say that our group has the determination and willingness to complete these tasks to a good standard, but we just need to focus on what needs to get done and prioritize certain things.

Magazine Cover Feedback

Final Magazine Cover

Following the first draft of the Paleme magazine cover we have altered the colour correction and contrast to give a more realistic image, we have increased the size of the text and Paleme to give a clearer presentation, we have included the Paleme album name and songs, we have included brief explanation of further magazine contents and we have finally slightly adjusted the layout of the text and included a bar code to create a finished and clear product.

Digipak Research

Template

The template of a digipak shows that six images are required. The most important sides are the front and back as while the CD case is closed these are the only two you can see. Another significant aspect of a digipak is the spine. The template below suggests the spine runs vertically separating the page into 3 equal parts.

Similar artist's CD cover

Below is the back cover for an album produced by the Arctic Monkeys. On this cover there is the song list that features on the CD itself. Additionally, there is a bar-code in the bottom right corner and next to this is very small text containing extra information such as the record company and a URL to the website of the band. The spine contains the name of the band and also evident is a serial number at the opposite end of the spine.

Digipak Progress

 1st Draft

In the first draft I selected a variety of images of Paleme (Jordan) because I decided the digipak would be solely focused on Paleme as an artist. The spine of the CD includes text of "paleme" in Prosto Sans italics. I decided that in future drafts of the digipak I would use this font across the digipak. The blue circle represents where the CD is located. Personally, I think the first draft was a good starting point when choosing different images and image effects.

2nd Draft

After researching into what makes a good digipak, I made many changes which are showed in the image below. Firstly, I eliminated the horizontal spine from the 2nd draft because it is not necessary to have as the digipak folds over. Secondly, I changed two images from the original draft, these are the bottom left and bottom right images. I admired the effect that the flash had on the leaves in the bottom left picture. As for the front cover, we took another picture in the same location because the original we took looked too forced. In addition to this, I added effects to the bottom middle picture and to the top right image. The bottom middle picture has an effect which blurs the image so that the text stands out more. I chose to add an effect to the top right image because it gives the image a unique look and goes in hand with the nature aspect of the image.

Furthermore, I added the song list to the back cover along with the essential pieces of information such as the bar-code and involved companies. Again, I chose the same font for the song list yet this time the colour is white so it is more clear for the viewers. The front cover now includes both the artist's name (Paleme) and the album name (The New Pioneer). They appear separately on both sides of Jordan's head. As the background is already very colorful, I used a glowing effect on the text in order to increase its visibility. Moreover, I changed the content in the spine so that it now reads "Paleme / The New Pioneer" instead of just "Paleme".

Social Media Research

As part of our social media research we researched individual artists that have a substantial social media following. We then compared each artist and what sort of content their accounts consist of.

We found that Drake has one of the largest social media followings for an individual artist. His social media consists of him at various events, his merchandise and his photos from his concerts and tours. this therefore represents his tour and merchandise and further promotes and markets his tour and merchandise.

Stormzy has a similar social media approach with his account consisting of various images of himself, tour information, collaborations and album covers. This also promotes his image, album and upcoming music.

Finally the Weeknd is an artist with a very large following but as a retro style artist he publishes his personal image and therefore genre of music along side his tour information. This approach unlike Stormzy or Drake creates a understanding of his image and genre in addition to advertising his music.
