Types of Music Videos; Performance, Narrative, Concept
This particular video follows a narrative structure instead of performance/concept. The video starts with the main performer waking up to a new day. Then, the performer is seen doing hygiene duties after waking up. After this, he then leaves the house to meet with his friend and eat some breakfast. Shortly after, he returns to his house with a larger group of friends to play on a games console and chill out. Later in the evening, he adventures out to a local pub and then goes back home when it turns late and dark. The final shot ends with a zoom out effect from his bedroom into the sky. It is clear this is a narrative style video because it follows a chronological order therefore it must be telling a story. In this case the story is an insight to a casual day in the life of the musical artist.
3 Track Presentation
I really like this song and the atmosphere it creates. Although its not a very exciting tune, I think the lyrics are great and portray a much deeper message, and even this fake music video created by a fan forges a great visual representation of what the video could potentially look like. What I personally think we could do is get a variety of shots involving Harrys car, with loads of angles and transitions, because that relates to the song completely. And then those shots could be combined with colourful images and animations using the many after effects techniques.
This song is great and it suits our group very well; just from the general vibe I get from this song I can picture shots that represent sadness and bitterness. The song literally talks about falling apart, presumably in relation to a romantic issue, and from this I could play around with different effects that stipulate a morbid aurora.
From this song I portray our video to contain trippy shots and effects, because of its many base drops; when the base drops at these particular points in the song the music video can astray into complete psychedelic madness. The song is all about drugs and how a relationship is reliant upon them, the storyline that we could speculate from this would be interesting to perceive.
Andrew Goodwin
Goodwin saw a connection between producing a successful music video and the features it contained. these factors were:
1. The Relationship between the lyric and visuals - Illustrates
- Contradicts
- Amplifies
2. Thought Beats: seeing the sounds, their relationship between the visuals and the music.
3. Genre - related styles and iconography present : visuals matching the genre
- looking at it without the music would it fit the genre
4. Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalists: the creation of a star image to promote a recognisable brand image e.g Miley Cyrus appearing crazy to make a new image for herself...
5. Voyeurism - looking at someone at the star in lust
6. Intertextual references to other media texts: making references with other songs, producing similar videos to represent the previous one.

Carol Vernallis
Her theory is based on four key concepts: narrative, editing, camera movement/ tracking & diegesis.
Narrative
Mess around with the order of narrative, think about pacing, keep it interesting.
Editing
Makes it interesting if it breaks normal conversions e.g. jump cuts
Jump cuts = abrupt transitions from one scene of another
Camera movement/ tracking
establishing where you are, master shots, establishing shot, close ups. Making sure these are used throughout.
Diegesis
Where the music video is set, how they reveal it slowly. In Vernallis terms she expresses that the setting may be seen but the viewer may not know where the setting actually is. for example in Beyoncé's run the world.

No Rest
For this task, we had to listen to No Rest by Dry The River without viewing the music video. During the song i noted down some ideas as to what i thought the music video would look like.
Ideas
- I think the song is about a young man who finds love but eventually the relationship comes to an end. Therefore, the video may be set in an isolated area where the man finds himself in as he struggles to comprehend what he has lost.
- Adding to this, the weather could be used to reflect the man's feeling, therefore we would see rain pouring and dark clouds in the sky.
Group ideas
- In a secluded woodland, with the video showing a guy and his girlfriend
- At a beach in the winter, a young girl, flashing back to the happier times
- By a river with nature and goats walking past
- A man/ lead singer walking down the river playing his guitar

Shooting Schedule
Shooting Reflection
- Overall, we achieved everything in our shooting schedule within the time frame allocated. Our filming was efficient and we did not have to retake many shots. This is because our schedule was precise and we had planned thoroughly so that we did not make any mistakes.

Production Diary
Monday 26th June:This is the first day of our preliminary task and we have researched a range of songs that we have short listed. Some of the songs that we have short listed are, Yours-Ella Henderson, 7 Things- Miley Cyrus, Bitter Sweet Symphony-The Verve as well as 212 by Azaelia Banks. The song we have chosen is 212 of which we will use 2 different actors within.
Tuesday 27th June:
Today we have analysed the 212 music video and Leah and Antonio have screen grabbed a range of different cuts within the music video. Each shot they numbered and decided where we should film this video, and what locations we decided to chose. The primary location being in school as most of the beginning is in front of a brick wall.
Wednesday 28th June:
In todays lesson we have decided that we will conduct the video up until the 40-42 second mark to cut out the rude language. As well as this, the locations we have decided to film the video is in school, in a corner shop and outside a local house.
Thursday 29th June:
Today was the first day of filming for our preliminary task and we filmed the majority of the video. We filmed all the mid and close up shots with the girl and boy. We have analysed the footage that we have too choose from when pairing all the video together.
Friday 30th June:
Sophie, Leah and Ant have all gone off site and this is our final day of filming. We have filmed the last extra clips, for example the ones of the house outside and within the shop. Once we had filmed all of these clips we imported these onto premiere
Monday 3rd July:
This is the first day of editing. We have all the footage already imported previously. We placed all the footage in order that we could and matched it up to the main 212 video, along with the soundtrack.
Tuesday 4th July:
Today, we carried on with our editing for our preliminary. Our main focus in editing for today was to perfect the timings between each cut before we added any video effects such as the black & white effect. During this hour, Sophie spent lots of time ensuring the details from both videos matched. After this, Sophie then used the black & white effect on the entire footage.
Thursday 6th July:
Today is our last day before we are able to hand in all of our work for media and it is the final deadline before we leave school until year 13. We have got to complete all of our previous tasks as well as all of our prelim tasks which consist of the storyboard, evaluation and the prelim video.
Song Ideas Feedback
Following our song idea presentation we received feedback from the other class groups on what they believed to be our strongest song choice and what one they believed would work the best and how we could improve our strongest idea.
Song 1 - 'No option - Post Malone.
Our feedback for this initial song idea was very contrasting. This is because the majority of our feedback consisted of how the song was too upbeat/fast to make look accurate and clear. However the overall lyrics of the song was said to have a good variety of possibilities. Therefore because of this feedback as a group we have decided not to go with this initial choice as we believe the feedback is accurate after comparing this song to our other ideas.
Song 2 - 'I Fall apart' - Post Malone.
Similar to our first song idea this song received a range of positive and negative. However this choice received feedback that agreed strongly with how we believed we could portray the lyrics and how we could represent the genre and mood of the song accurately. Opposing this the negative feedback consisted of the song being rather repetitive and very slow and not interesting during the long introduction. Due to this feedback we have also decided not to go with this choice as the feedback is too varied from an audience of the age of our target audience.
Song 3 - 'Drugs' - Adam Jensen.
Finally this final choice was our most positive for feedback with the majority of our audience liking the mood, genre and beat of the song. our feedback consisted of the majority believing as a group we would be able to suit and represent the lyrics and overall song more accurately and effective than the other choices.
